Concrete Driveways Built to Last
A concrete driveway is one of the most significant investments you can make in a property. Done well, it lasts decades and adds real value. Done poorly, it cracks, shifts, and becomes a problem within a few years. RB Concrete takes the preparation seriously because that is where a good driveway starts, with properly excavated ground, a solid compacted base, and correctly placed reinforcing before a drop of concrete is poured.
We have laid driveways across the Matakana Coast and beyond in all shapes and configurations, long rural access driveways, steep coastal driveways, wide residential driveways with curved edges, and everything in between. We carry our own Kobelco 2T mini excavator and 3T tipper truck, so we handle the dig-out and base work ourselves without waiting on other contractors.
Concrete Driveway Finishes
RB Concrete works with a range of finishes to suit different properties and client preferences. Not sure which finish is right for your property? Burga will give you honest advice when he visits the site.
Exposed aggregate
The most popular choice in this area. Natural stone exposed at the surface provides excellent grip, handles NZ weather well, and suits the natural surroundings of lifestyle and coastal properties. RB Concrete carries two aggregate styles: warm rounded river stone and darker angular chip.
Broomed finish
a practical, slip-resistant option created by drawing a broom across fresh concrete. Clean, durable, and cost-effective for driveways, paths, and access ways.
Smooth trowelled
A power-floated smooth finish, most commonly used for indoor floors and slabs, but available for sheltered outdoor areas.
Concrete Paths, Patios, and Outdoor Areas
A well-laid concrete path can completely change how a property works day to day, linking outdoor areas, improving access, and adding structure to a garden or yard. RB Concrete lays paths and patios across Matakana, Warkworth, and the Hibiscus Coast, in the same finishes available for driveways.
We also handle pool surrounds, courtyard areas, and other outdoor concrete surfaces. If you are planning an outdoor entertaining area or need access concrete around the home, give Burga a call and he will walk you through the options.

House Floors and Concrete Slabs
RB Concrete has extensive experience pouring house floors and slabs across the region, from slab-on-grade foundations for new residential builds to floor pours for additions, sleepouts, and garages. Slab work is exacting, levels need to be accurate, reinforcing needs to be correct, and the pour needs to be managed carefully. It is an area where RB Concrete’s preparation-first approach shows in the finished result.
We work alongside builders and project managers as a concrete subcontractor on new builds across Matakana, Warkworth, Mangawhai, and surrounding areas. If you are a builder looking for a reliable local concrete layer for your next project, Burga is straightforward to deal with and will fit the concrete work around your schedule.

Questions
About
Concrete Driveways, Paths & Slabs
How long does a concrete driveway last in the Matakana area?
A well-prepared and properly poured concrete driveway should last 30 to 40 years in normal residential use, and often longer. The key factors are ground preparation, base compaction, correct reinforcing, appropriate concrete mix strength, and proper joint placement to manage cracking. In the Matakana and wider North Auckland area, the clay-heavy soils mean good sub-base preparation is especially important, cutting corners at this stage is the most common reason driveways fail prematurely. RB Concrete handles all preparation in-house and does not rush this stage.
What is exposed aggregate concrete, and why is it popular in this area?
Exposed aggregate is a concrete finish created by washing back the surface of freshly poured concrete to reveal the natural stone aggregate beneath. The result is a textured surface with visible stone, which gives it excellent slip resistance, handles weather well, and ages gracefully without looking tired. It suits the natural, rural, and coastal aesthetic of most properties on the Matakana Coast, which is why it has become the default choice for driveways and paths in the area. RB Concrete carries two aggregate styles: a warm, rounded river stone mix and a darker, angular chip, and Burga will show you samples when he visits.
Do you need a building consent for a concrete driveway or path in the Matakana area?
In most cases, a standard residential concrete driveway or path does not require a building consent in New Zealand, provided it is not part of a structural element and meets standard setback requirements. However, if your driveway involves significant earthworks, retaining walls, or access changes near a boundary, a consent may be needed. RB Concrete will let you know if your specific job is likely to require council involvement, and can advise on who to contact if so. For house slab work, a building consent is almost always required, and RB Concrete works alongside your builder to fit the concrete within the permitted build.
How long does it take for a concrete driveway to cure and be usable?
Concrete begins to harden within a few hours of being poured, but full strength takes around 28 days to develop. For practical purposes, you can walk on a new concrete driveway within 24 to 48 hours. Light vehicles can typically be driven on it after five to seven days, and heavier vehicles and full use should wait until at least 28 days have passed. In cooler temperatures, the curing process takes longer, and RB Concrete will advise you on timing based on the weather and the specifics of your pour.
Can RB Concrete match the concrete to the style of my home or property?
Yes. The range of available finishes, aggregate styles, and edge treatments gives a good degree of flexibility when it comes to making a driveway or path suit a particular property. Exposed aggregate comes in different stone colours and sizes, broomed concrete can be given shaped or curved edges, and coloured concrete is also available for clients who want something more specific. Burga will talk through your options at the site visit and make recommendations based on your property’s surroundings and your preferences.
Do you work on driveways in areas with difficult access or steep sites?
Yes. RB Concrete regularly works on steep, curved, and access-challenging sites across the Matakana Coast and Hibiscus Coast, areas where steep sections, native bush, and winding access are common. Our Kobelco 2T mini excavator is well-suited to confined and sloped sites where a full-sized machine could not operate, and Burga has the experience to assess and manage challenging ground conditions. If your site is steep or tricky, that is exactly the kind of job RB Concrete is set up to handle.
